Billings, John S., (John Shaw), 1898-1975 (Donor)
1930-1950
John Shaw Billings (1898-1975) was the first managing editor of Life Magazine, and spent much time at the Redcliffe plantation in Aiken County, South Carolina. Billings purchased Redcliffe in 1935 from his uncle Henry Cumming Hammond (1868-1961) for $15,000 and the Billings' family had owned the estate since it was built by the former South Carolina Governor James Henry Hammond, who was also Billings' great-grandfather. This collections consist of many home movies of the extended Billings family, both at Redcliffe and its environs and at the Billings apartment in New York City. There are also copies of the series 'The March of Time' newsreels, as well as 'Crusade in Europe' and other film series made by Time magazine.
